Project 13 – Hockney Montage

A] Creating a Montage

To complete a montage you will need to combine a minimum of 16 images from one location into a composite image.

Step 1: Open PhotoShop and create a new document. Name the file following our file format protocol (last name, first initial, underscore, project name). The dimensions you will need to use are width=11 inches, height=8.5 inches, resolution 100.

Step 2: Open the “Location” folder you be using for this montage. You may need to resize the window so that you can see your PhotoShop workspace.

Step 3: Begin with an image that is in the middle of your field of view for this location.

Step 4: Click and hold the image and drag it to your PhotoShop workspace and drop it there. PhotoShop will now open this image in your workspace.

Step 5: Before you copy the image, check to see if you need to resize the image. At the top of Photoshop, you will see “Image”, click and follow the drop-down menu to “Resize” and then click “Image Size”.  Look at the “Document Size” — if the width is 5 inches, then skip to the step 6. If the “Document Size” width is larger than 5, then click in the window and change the number to 5. Click “OK”.

Step 6: If the image has a width of 5 inches, select the whole image (CTRL A) and copy the image (CTRL C), then click on your montage image and paste the image (CTRL V).

Step 7: Choose the next image from your “Work” folder and repeat Steps 4 to 6 until you have merged a minimum of 16 images. However, you should strive to combine as many images as possible (there may be a small prize for the student that can combine the most number of images in one montage).

Step 8: save as .psd

Step 9: Then save a copy as .jpeg

Step 10: submit .psd & .jpeg to Media Folder
