Daily Active Reading Time Begins next week

Beginning on Monday, March 28, NLSS will begin Daily Active Reading Time (DART) to promote reading in all classes. Please encourage your student to bring reading materials to class/school each day to support the reading program. Reading materials are also available in each classroom and at the NLSS library. The program will operate based on the schedule below:
Monday & Tuesdays: First 15 mins of P2
Wednesday & Thursday: First 15 mins of P4
Please see the data below as a reminder of the importance of reading every day:

  • Students score 90% better than peers on reading tests when reading for at least 20 minutes a day, exposing students to 1.8 million words a year.
  • Students score in the 50th percentile on reading tests when reading only 4.6 minutes a day, exposing students to 282,000 words per year
  • Students score in the 10th  percentile on reading tests when reading for less than 1 minute per day, exposing students to 8,000 words per year. (it would take this student a year to be exposed to the same number of words that a student reading for 20 min a day would see in two weeks)
